Cheryl Tiegs Lists Balinese Style House in Bel Air

SELLER: Cheryl Tiegs
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $12,000,000
SIZE: 4,770 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: America's first supermodel (and not so successful contestant on Celebrity Apprentice a few seasons ago) Cheryl Tiegs has put her long time home in Los Angeles's prime East Gate Bel Air area on the market with a $12,000,000 price tag.

Property records show Miz Tiegs purchased the 1.43 acre property in May 1996 for an unknown amount of dough. Current listing information shows the 4,770 square foot house has a total of four bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms including a staff room, guest house (with bathroom) and a roomy master bedroom with fireplace, sitting area and spa-style bathroom slathered in sea grass and what listing details ambiguously call "rich woodwork."

The house was all did up and done over in haute Balinese inspired style by effervescently flamboyant Million Dollar Decorator Martyn Lawrence Bullard. The main living area have dark wood floors, a soaring vaulted ceiling held aloft by sturdy carved wood columns and long banks and wood-framed sliding glass doors that suck up the view of the surrounding thicket of mature tropical landscaping.

Listing details go on to reveal there's a wine cellar and to describe the eat-in kitchen as "spacious." And it is spacious with a butcher block topped Subaru-sized center island and industrial style appliances but it's also a bit wacky and dated with a low textured ceiling and a high gloss cream and black tiled floor.

Thee lushly planted grounds include a long gated driveway, a good-sized motor court, three car attached garage in the back, a kidney-shaped swimming pool and various meandering pathways, towering palms and several fountains.

12M to have a tiny kidney shaped pool? And the decor looks like he shopped at Pier One. Shes supposed to be a shrewd Business woman so maybe she will get her price??

I call bs on the claim MLB decorated this! There is nothing metallic anywhere.

This will end up being a tear down. That size lot in the location, it will either be completely leveled or renovated and expanded beyong recognition.

Mama! The 17th floor of 778 Park was just listed!

What in God's name is being constructed next door? A Nike missile base?

I too am dubious about the claim of MLB decor; it borders on "meh" to me. But the grounds are lovely & the "Balinese" bones I find curiously appealing -- but she'll never get asking price before it tips over that retaining wall...

LGB it had some sort of landslide problems and I believe Bollenbachs are doing all the land work and then will sell em off as a couple parcels.

Rosco Mare said...

LGB:

The massive earth moving project between Nimes Rd and St. Cloud Rd will remedy the possibility of a landslide caused by the underground water. (explained to me by a local resident.)

In the immediate area of Cheryl Tieg's house, two celebrity estates have been demolished: Mac Davis' English-style house, and Jim Nabors' southern colonial-style house.

The late Elizabeth Taylor's estate is also on Nimes Rd., and Nancy Reagan and Jerry Perenchio ("Beverly Hillbillies" estate)live in the vicinity. (Both profiled by our Mama Dearest). Actually, the Reagans have endured alot of contruction between the current project and Perenchio's gorgeous large scale, multi-year project in the mid-90s. I won't elaborate on the creepy "Beverly Hills Housewives" Mohamid's house nearby.

Can someone explain 338 St Pierre to me? It looks almost identical to Hadids house on Nimes, did he build it?

Sandpiper said...

She spends a lot of time in Aftica on a wildlife preserve. Might have something to do with the overall influence, including the dark wood elements. Very good taste. Comfortable home. I like it.

Anonymous said...

MAMA who bought Le Belvedere? You never did inform the children!

lil' gay boy said...

Thanks, kids!

That's an awful lot of erosion to deal with; too bad it didn't swallow up the Hadid house instead...

;-)

...never liked the siting of Hadid's house; always reminded me of a scolded puppy turning its face to the wall.

BTW, wasn't that the house Sammy from Shahs of Sunset was "supervising"?

Anonymous said...

No Sammy "worked on" the Crescent Drive house.
Does the Nimes house have a rear garage or something? There's a gate but I can't tell what's behind it and on the map it's a little blurry and covered by trees.

Spent many years involved with a house in East Hampton on one of the lanes south of the highway. Endless noise by construction and earth moving on multiple properties at one time -- in front, behind, to the side, a quarter of a mile away. One would finally finish, and another would begin. The warning beep of tractors backing up from 7 in the morning until dusk. You started to have hope that there was nothing left to do, that it must all just about be done, but then you would walk around and there were always more opportunities.

On top of the construction, there were the lawn crews. Every house on the street had someone coming at a different time on a different day. Mowers and leaf blowers roaring through the day.

I came to appreciate the great luxury of quiet. At Nancy Reagan's age, there's a good chance she's got significant hearing loss, which given the location of her house in the midst of the Bel Air equivalent of that East Hampton insanity, would have to be seen as a blessing of sorts.

Btw, what's happened to Taylor's house? Torn down yet? And how 'bout Marion Jorgenson's up the road from there? Gone?

Anonymous said...

OMG that one row of houses on Nimes are all sooooo fugly! Hadid's house, the Saudi prince's palace, and then that other one next door that looke like a Four Seasons!

Money can't buy class!

Anonymous said...

Has that massive earth moving project next door been finished since the last Google pictures?

Cheryl's house shares a property line with Nancy Reagan. Does the Secret Service have to vet the buyers?

Anonymous said...

11:24 what business is it of the secret service? Their job is to protect her, not worry about who bought the neighbors house.

Anonymous said...

@11:41
My question about the Secret Service was basically a bit of fun, but your response is not fun, it's idiotic. If someone who the government (but maybe not the broker over at Hilton & Hyland or wherever) had evidence was, say, obsessed with hatred for the Reagans and had a history of threatening them signed a contract to buy the house next door or across the street, then it definitely would be their business to know. Don't for one second think they don't know exactly who is living around her.

Anonymous said...

Would such a crazy person have $12 mil for Bel Air? And why wait so long to move close to her? And if someone had a history of threatening the first lady, wouldn't there have been some sort of consequence? Like maybe a restraining order?
Just think with your head from now on @1206

Anonymous said...

I dont doubt they know who the neighbors are, but I live in Chicago and when the house next door to Obamas was sold there was no vetting process.

Anonymous said...

I believe that yes, the Secret Service would vet them, and if the Secret Service didn't like them, the house would encounter "closing" problems. Who would be so naive as to think otherwise?

Anonymous said...

Okay, I'm thinking with my head and so I'm not going to respond to your last response. Especially since it sounds like you may know something about restraining orders.

Anonymous said...

Obamas the current president, btw, not the widow of a former president living on over an acre of hilly land in swank Bel Air, it was a 35' lot on Chicagos South Side and there was still no vetting process.
But thx.

Rosco Mare said...

Forgot to mention that I like the Tiegs house alot. Love the tranquil pool area. Serene environment in a great neighborhood.

Fun celebrity estate fact: The new Hadid house on Crescent Dr. in Beverly Hills is the third house to occupy the site. The first was the King Gillette (razor fortune) mansion purchased and occupied by silent film super star Gloria Swanson in the 1920s. The "white elephant of a place" was razed in the 1950s.

The 1951 Burton Schutt-designed Jorgensen house up on Bel-Air Road was profiled by our Mama Dearest in 2008 after it was purchase by film producer and director Michael Bay, who later and tragically demolished it. But I won't go there now; Our Mama and fellow children may remember by sadness about this historical loss.

Anonymous said...

Someone here knows for sure that there was no investigation by the Secret Service of the buyer of the house next to the Obamas?

Anonymous said...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my impression that the Obamas bought their house before he became President. And yes, the Secret Service vetted it, again, someone would have to be very naive to think otherwise. As for the Reagans, he wasn't nearly as beloved as some would have you believe, and neither was Nancy Reagan. That's why they moved from Pali, because of the lack of security. The Secret Service vets all the neighbors of a Presidential residence- that's part of their job- and yes, it makes a lot of people very unhappy to be a neighbor of a President. It would have to be disclosed, and most people wouldn't be interested in such a property. I sure wouldn't, and I wouldn't care who it was.

Anonymous said...

It was a vacant lot next to Obamas, not a house. Secret Service required proof of funds and prospective buyers names only so they would be allowed past the barriers that block off the streets nearby, as they require of all the neighbors and all their guests.

Anonymous said...

A very common practice you may recognize as 'shown by appointment only to pre-qualified buyers'

Anonymous said...

The government has NO jurisdiction involving private property. Do any of you have google/understand the law?

Cute house!

Now I know how Cheryl stays so thin. One look at that kitchen would keep anyone away.

lil' gay boy said...

I guess if you've seen one Hadid house, you've seen 'em all...

;-)

Please do not feed the troll; Mama's misplaced the wooden spoon again.

To a previous commenter's point, from a security standpoint, I think the Reagan house up on San Onofre in the Palisades was good, and better than where they ended up in Bel Air post-presidency. They always prefer to situate them on a cul-de-sac for obvious reasons, which San Onofre is, and then they can usually get permission to gate the street as they did with both of the Bushes. Not sure about the Clintons, but they're also on a cul-de-sac in Chappaqua. There are a lot of ways out of Bel Air, not just through the two gates.

I just don't think the old house was posh enough for them when they came back. Solidly upper middle class, but even in the old days not the way their friends were living. (Btw, it just sold in the 5m range, and it appeared from the pictures in the listing that it was pretty much as it must have been when they lived there.)

Anonymous said...

Convicted fellon Tony Rescoe did his wink wink deal with the Obamas before Barrack was president (and Tony didnt live next door, otherwise the Obamas would not own their Chicago property. And 12:38 the widow of ANY President is afforded Secret Service protection but you dont know that because your from Canada.

Anonymous said...

@252
No I'm the commenter who pointed out I live in Chicago.
They purchased 1/6 of the vacant lot next door, owned by Tony Resko, and did so to extend their property line to accommodate (if necessary bc at the time it wasn't) a perimeter fence.

Rosco Mare said...

Curbed LA posted photos of Reagan's former Pacific Palisades house: a very nice MCM in great condition. And as someone already mentioned, it sold in the $5m range.

My understanding is that the Reagans sold it after moving to Washington because they simply didn't need it any more. The Reagans were not rich people at that time; their friends were.

Their friends loaned them money to purchase the Bel-Air house upon leaving the White House, and they repaid the loan with interest. The new neighborhood was chosen because many of their friends, including informal kitchen cabinet members such as Bloomingdale, Salvatori (classic Paul Williams southern colonial demolished on lower Bel-Air Rd.), Jorgensen, Wilson, Dart and Wick resided in Bel-Air and Holmby Hills. The 1950s ranch house was decorated by William Haines business partner Ted Graber who decorated the White House private residential floor.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Rosco Mare, the records I saw state that the Reagans sold San Onofre in 1982, a year into his first term. After that, they went to the ranch.

In fact, that's the last recorded sale until the one this year, indicating that the last owner bought it from the Reagans. It appears that very little renovation was done in the intervening years (the kitchen and bathrooms, maybe). Don't know if that neighborhood was built out pretty completely in the 50's or not, but whatever was built up there must have been MCM. Look at the aerials now and there are almost none left. And this one will probably be the next to go.

The Reagans were in the house when they learned he had been elected, and then if I recall what I've read, went to a celebration at the Jorgensens.

The Jorgensen's house was essentially a richer, better version of their house. Wouldn't be surprised if the furnishings were also aspiring to the Jorgensen's style -- upholstered pieces mixed with asian antiques. It's interesting that today owners seem slavish in their use of only mid-century furniture in these houses, but these wealthy Californians who embraced the MCM style often furnished them quite differently

Petra's said...

The Reagan house that you've been discussing was just sold a month or so ago to producers Michael Manheim & Janus Cercone, who are known for renovating and flipping houses. Maybe there's still hope for the ol' girl?

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, the news that Jaman has bought the house means that almost certainly it will bear virtually no traces it's former self. It will become a "Martha's Vineyard cottage" or something along those lines. Depressing news.

I saw this house on "Living with Ed" Begley Jr. show on PlanetGreen network a couple of years ago. It has a bank of solar panels in the back and is all green - lighting, heating, solar water heater, etc. Very much in tune with Ed Begley and his environmental causes and he loved her home. Very zen and very lush but a bit dark.

@252, Honey, the Obamas and Rezko closed on their Chicago properties on the same day. The house and the vacant lot next door were initially listed as one property, but was apparently too $ for the Obamas. Thus, Democratic-fundraising-soon-to-be-indicted Rezko came up with the idea that he would buy the lot next door; presumbaly with profits from his kickback schemes. That being said, if a convicted felon can own property next to a sitting President, than Miss Tiegs should have no problem selling her casa. Kudos Cheryl.

I'm late to the party but, per the listing agent for the lot next to Obama (see last line of linked article), the Secret Service requires 24 hours advanced notice to show the lot. Call it what you wish, but that is for vetting the prospective buyers.

I love Cheryl and known of here for years. She sold here bird house street back in the mid 90s to buy this place I believe in the 4-5 million range. The style represents her way of live (she is 65 and not touched up-good clean living). She knows Bel Air is changing and not for the good so the house is priced at land value and is aware it will probably be a tear down due to its size.Perfect size for a single woman with 2 teen age kids which is not Bel Air anymore.

P.S.Her love of Africa goes way back to the 70's and first husband photographer Peter Beard where he discovered Iman-there are some drop dead gorgeous things down there due to its lack of development so to say.

Oh yes! I love them too and was also looking at the Hickory (inspiration photo was the second one you listed which I tore out of who-knows-where years ago -- LOVE that room). Anyway, too expensive for my blood, so when I found some vintage bamboo chairs, recently, I bought those instead. Same open feel.
